How to Look Fabulous at Fifty

By: Lin Parker

Is fifty the new forty ... or even the new thirty? If you are in your fifties, you may look back at how different your mother appeared at the same age and feel that you want to stay looking young and sophisticated, rather than middle aged and frumpy. It is certainly true that people are living longer, and therefore want to look and feel young for as long as possible.

You only have to look at popular "middle aged" celebrities who look young and glamorous, such as Madonna, Oprah Winfrey and Sharon Osbourne, and you may find it hard to believe they are in their fifties. They may have personal trainers, hairdressers and make up artists to make them look their best, and maybe they have had expensive cosmetic treatments, or even a nip and tuck, but there are many affordable age reversing beauty treatments and lifestyle changes available to the average person, which can make you look at least ten years younger.

Whilst you do not want to appear as "mutton dressed as lamb", your clothing can make a huge difference in how you appear to others. Browse through fashion magazines, find a look you like, and adopt a similar style for your own wardrobe. There are numerous TV programmes giving advice on dressing for your age and figure type, where you can learn invaluable and free tips!

If you have had your hair styled the same way for more than 5 years, then maybe it is time for a change. Go to a good hairdresser and ask their advice on what would suit your hair type and the shape of your face. A good cut and a different hair colour can take years off and give you a real boost of self confidence.

Common problems for those over 50 are facial lines, wrinkles, sagging skin, age spots, thinning eyebrows, and loss of definition to the lips. There are many creams and serums to reduce wrinkles and dark spots, and affordable cosmetic treatments like botox, dermal fillers and lip plumping injections which can give the appearance of a mini face lift. There are many treatments to consider for those looking for a non-surgical face lift. Laser skin tightening, skin peels, and injections to stimulate the body's natural production of collagen are just some of the treatments which are available at local beauty salons.

For those willing to go under the knife, new cosmetic surgery techniques are constantly being developed to give better results with a quicker recovery. You can even have a surgical face and neck lift while you are awake, with a local anaesthetic!
