What is the Perfume Hoax?

The perfume hoax is an urban legend, or myth that has been circulating on the internet since 1999. The perfume hoax is very widespread and many versions have been invented to garner interest and provoke fear. While it is true that we can never be too careful, this email hoax has absolutely no basis in reason or logic.

So what is the perfume hoax, you ask. Well the perfume hoax consists of emails that are passed on and forwarded to various email addressees claiming that men and women are approaching people in parking lots and asking them to smell the perfume that they are selling at rock bottom prices. The scenario goes like this. A man or woman is leaving a mall and is approached by two to four people in a car or in the parking lot asking them what kind of perfume or cologne they are wearing. The perfume people then ask if the 'victim' would be interested in sniffing the name brand inexpensive perfume that they are selling. Rumor has it that the perfume people intend on incapacitating the smeller with ether in their perfume bottles for the purples of robbing them. Many versions of this basic scenario have been told but the stories all follow this basic pattern. There are even perfume hoax emails circulating in New Zealand, Australia and Scotland, all with the same details.

One of the many problems with the perfume hoax is that there is no evidence of anything like this occurring. The email claims that people have been robbed of their cash and possessions but no police reports have been filed indicating this type of robbery. Also it is highly unlikely that this same band of hooligans with tainted perfume have traveled the world seeking unsuspecting victims to smell their perfumes.
